ACIDplanet.com® traverses both Meat- and Cyber-space to bring back SpaceJunky, a band that is making a name for itself in SecondLife. There’s nothing virtual about their groove, though. Find out for yourself by remixing "Gravitational Pull."

About the Band

Spacejunky is a band for the new millennium if there ever was one. Comprised of world-class musicians with notable credits individually, they have collectively created a band with a debut cd that is already receiving rave reviews. SpaceJunky is also challenged by the logistics of it’s 3 members living in 3 continents and 3 time zones, and as such have been promoting their new CD “Resident Alien” online via the internet in a virtual world called SecondLife, the results of which have landed them a feature interview shown on CNN and CNN International’s Next Big Thing with CNN Chief Technology and Environment correspondent Miles O’Brien whose attention was caught by their innovative use of cutting edge technology to promote their band. Second Life is an exploding online virtual 3D community with over 10 million members. As professional musicians who have worked with large touring bands such as Kylie Minogue and stood on some of the world’s largest stages, they find it ironic that recognition has come to them as an animated virtual act.

All Australians by birth and heart, they continue their cosmic musical mission through the connectivity of the internet when time, money and Qantas can’t provide.

Tania Smith, founding member, lead vocalist and keyboardist/programmer/co-producer
started playing keyboards in Tasmania, Australia at the age of 8. She was playing
professionally at 10, always surrounded by musicians much older than herself playing
R&B, Blues & Jazz in the local club scene. At 15 she won the national Yamaha
keyboard competition in Australia. Later she moved to Sydney playing & appearing in
videos with some of Australia’s biggest artists including Beatfish (w/ Martin Plaza from
Mental As Anything & James Freud from the Models), Alex Smith (Moving Pictures),
Margaret Urlich & touring locally & overseas with Kylie Minogue.

After meeting American producer Rafe Van Hoy, Tania began pursuing a solo career. A song they wrote together “Lesson Of Love” helped Ashley Cleveland win a Grammy in ’95 for best Rock Gospel Album by the same title. Recently Tania has played with Billy Burnette of Fleetwood Mac, Michael McDonald, Willie Nelson and toured as musical director/keyboards/vocals for Jamie O’Neal.

Having played in live bands all along Tania wanted to create a live-band feel around her vision and brought drummer-extraordinaire Luke Mason and guitar -wizard Dan Harris from Australia to complete “The Groove”. This combination worked so well together that it wasn’t long before they were co-writing some of the songs as well and SpaceJunky was born. (Even while recording their own cd they found spare time to lend their musician talents to new-artist Steve Azar whose first single was #2 in the US charts for 3 weeks!)

The center of SpaceJunky’s music is dominated by Smith’s keyboards…….especially the Mighty Hammond B3 which she describes as “a temple unto itself”. When the B3 beast becomes too confining she turns to a Roland remote Axis keyboard.
