About the Contest

To guarantee unique performances and material, Vrenna composed The Attraction to All Things Uncertain in a novel way. He provided each guest vocalist with musical material, a reproduction of the painting that inspired the album, a plot summary, and instructions on what he hoped they would contribute.

That's similar to what you're going to do using Vrenna's "Microsize Boy."

Here's your chance to show off your remixing skills to one of the world's top remixers. "Microsize Boy" is rife with electronic beats, effects, and distorted vocals... perfect for remixing. Listen to the original track, see if you can determine what Vrenna's trying to convey, and then retell that story in your own way.

About the Artist

Grammy® Award-winning artist, producer, and remix virtuoso Chris Vrenna takes us on a journey through The Attraction to All Things Uncertain with his project tweaker on Six Degree Records.

A little background: Chris Vrenna has been huge in alternative music since he began hammering drums and programming beats with Nine Inch Nails. After leaving the band, he soon became one of the hottest studio wizards in the business. His credits are vast: David Bowie, Smashing Pumpkins, Marilyn Manson, Green Day, The Wallflowers, Hole, Rob Zombie, and Xzibit featuring Dr.Dre and Snoop Dogg. In a recent one-month period alone, he provided U2 with its "Elevation (Tomb Raider Mix)" for the summer blockbuster Tomb Raider and provided remixes for Nelly Furtado, Weezer, and Poe. In addition, he produced the recent album for Cold, whose CD is nearing gold status.

If you're into remixing or production, then Chris Vrenna's your man.

The Attraction to All Things Uncertain tells the story of Elliott, the Everyman featured in the CD's cover painting. To tell the story, Vrenna assembled a compelling sequence of pieces bristling with electronic effects, swampy slide guitar, and stadium-sized slammin' beats that alternate with moments of intimate introspection. Each note plays a role in the story of Elliott, whose life—if everything works out—will lead not to triumph, but to a kind of resolution born from resignation and acceptance.

Vrenna called upon guest vocalists David Sylvian, Will Oldham, and Craig Wedren to help tell the story. Three years in the making, tweaker's The Attraction to All Things Uncertain is a musical odyssey—terrifying at times, joyful at others—that demonstrates the music's ability to engage and move the listener.
