About the Contest

Here's how Steve puts together a track:

"Another approach is to record a solo guitar line or drum track and play different instruments to that track. On Monday I'll work out a 12-string line in E. Not listening to Monday's work on Tuesday I'll play a mandolin line in A to the same basic drum or vocal track. By Friday I'll have five tracks filled up and I'll finally listen to them all together and keep what works."

Sounds a lot like what you can do in ACID, n'est-ce pas? Take your creation, fly in random loops, see what works, progress…controlled chaos.

Despite his almost formalized Zen approach to composition, Steve emphasizes creativiy in music creation. He's intrigued by the creative process, and how artists free-up their minds to their muse. As Steve is judging this contest, you can bet he'll be listening to see how far you can take his music. He's got big ears—surprise him.

Here's your chance to seek out musical synchronicities with Steve Tibbetts. We're offering Black Temple from "A Man About a Horse." An ACID user from way back, Steve created the loops himself. What better way to get inside this master musician's mind than to hear how he parses his own creations? Need still more Steve? Then check out his new Loops for ACID Library, Steve Tibbetts, Friendly Fire: Premier Artist Construction Kit.

About the Artist

Steve Tibbetts started playing guitar at the age of six to get attention. It worked. Over the last two decades he's delivered some of the most innovative, challenging, and exciting sounds to come from any musician.

He's traveled the world over, and played, composed, and recorded with a mind-boggling roster of musicians and artists (including another Loops for ACID luminary, Marc Anderson). His influences range from first hearing the Blind Joe Mendelbaum Blues Band in the Teen Tent at the Dane County Junior Fair at age 12, to studying drumming with I Nyoman Pak Sumandhi in Denpasar. The music he creates from this input? He calls it "post-modern neo-primitivism."

Steve's signed with ECM Records, possibly the most progressive record label on the planet. He's in good company alongside other contemporary musicians such as Meredith Monk, John Cage, and Carla Bley. And he's just joined the family of geniuses behind the Loops for ACID loop libraries with his new release "Friendly Fire."

Steve's newest CD is titled "A Man About a Horse.

Note: Black Temple was nominated for Grammy ® as best rock instrumental! (10/21/2002)
