About the Artists
Sonic Foundry and Warner Bros. Jazz are proud to present the Old Kool Remix, the biggest jazz remix event the music world has ever witnessed! We’re offering loops cut straight from the master tapes of five classic jazz tracks:
![]() | George Benson, “Breezin” - - listen The most melodic lick in jazzdom .... more 'serious' guitar students learnt this before they learnt the intro to stairway to heaven ... and its from a multi-platinum album. |
![]() | Joe Sample, “Spellbound” - - listen Joe made crossover for the masses by always remembering the melody and the touch ... and he played rather well—big barrelhouse keys and r&b stylings. |
![]() | Michael Franks, “Popsicle Toes” - - listen Never met anyone with popsicle toes but then again the sixties are a long way back ... this guy makes pictures with lyrics ... |
![]() | Al Jarreau, “We’re In This Love Together” - - listen The greatest voice on the planet? Don’t know, but this is the epitome of old-school crooning .... guaranteed results on second date (or even sooner). |
![]() | Bob James/David Sanborn, “Maputo” - - listen Two guys together who made platinum a habit—mainly because once you’ve heard it, you can’t forget a song they wrote ... together and separately these guys wrote the books on hooks.... |
If you’re a jazz fan, you know how monumental this is. You also know that the Sound Development department at Sonic Foundry is staffed with jazz aficionados, so you’re ensured of using the most pristine, exciting, and stimulating loops possible. This is more than a remix, it’s virtual jazz reality.
If you’re not a jazz fan, you soon will be.
Old Kool: classic jazz by some of the coolest players ever.
No woodsheddin’ required. Grab the loops and gig with these cats. Go man, go.
A Note on the Loops
From Mark Siegenthaler, Sonic Foundry Sound Developer: The loops are organized by tune rather than by instrument. This is because each tune only contains between 25 and 35 loops, sometimes with very few loops per instrument.
In addition, the sample remix only contains loops from Maputo. It is designed to show an example of how to put together different sections of a song underneath a solo. The techniques used here could be applied to any song in the contest, or to any ACID composition utilizing loops from multiple songs.
