Lola Dutronic Remix Contest
From the Judge
Hello everyone.
My, there certainly are a lot of talented remixers out there, aren’t there? I was very impressed with a lot of the submissions, as they showed some real imagination and skill.
With this remix contest, we were looking for tracks with that elusive “X Factor”. A lot of what went into determining this was the question “What do we do with it?”
While I don’t have a lot of time for genres of the month, I do think that it’s a good idea to give some thought as to where your remix is going. For instance, is it a chill out groove for a compilation? Is it a thumping club anthem for a white label etc.? Perhaps a Timbaland/Neptunes vibe? Certainly a lot of you gave this some thought before submitting, just as it’s equally clear that a lot of you were taking the piss and submitting your own tracks with scant regard for what we were looking for. Also any tracks where you couldn’t be arsed to get things either in tune or in time were rejected instantly. Sorry.
Finally, I’d just like to say that if I’d known we were going to be doing this, I would have recorded things a whole lot better!

Airport (DA BOMB club MIXX!) by DJ SHOCK from DA BOMB MIXX! - listen
This one actually sounded like I was in a club, rather than someone's studio. The rolling bass and the house loops kick in and the song sneaks up on you. Then a break beat shows up halfway through for the breakdown section and builds to a satisfying conclusion. Result!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Runners Up (in order):
Lola, vous avez la joue aussi vermeille by ATlaS 5 - listen
Fabulous re-imagining of the track as a kind of Serge Gainsbourg with 70's mellotron. Would have been the winner were the track not ruined by the Lionel Ritchie "Say You Say Me" type piano. Do something about that piano and pump up the mellotron and give us a call!!!!!

Airport (Allen Summer of 68 Remix) by Allen ( ) rmx - listen
Ultimately more of a cover than a remix, but it's BRILLIANT. We wouldn't have thought of it in a million years. While we can't really see it as the remix winner, we're going to bestow the highest honour we can think of by attempting to perform your arrangement in our live show. Hope that's okay with you, Allen!

Slick! Slick!! Slick!!! Bit of a Faithless/Leftfield groove with a jazzy feel and a wicked kick drum that shows up about halfway through.

Whatever Lola Wants (Arabian Sands Electromix) by 7th_heaven - listen
Chill-out mix. Easily one of the most musical. An excellent example of how to balance our thing with your own thing. My only complaint is it's a bit on the short side at 2:39.

Nice techno-type mix, with a sort of breakbeat bit in the middle that worked quite well.

The remix that launched a thousand chill-out albums. Of course that's it's ultimate problem, since who needs a thousand chill-out albums?

Nice laid-back jazzy house groove. Not unlike Telepopmusik's "Breathe".

Nice and simple Jason Nevins (remember him?) style groove. Unlike a lot of these, this one actually made you want to move your feet.
