About the Contest

After a year-long hiatus working in the studio, San Francisco and ACIDplanet™ darlings Karmacoda return with their highly-anticipated third album, Illuminate. The album features 12 fresh tracks and represents a major move forward for the group, containing songs with strong hooks, melodies and an engaging evolution of their groove-laden electronic sound. For this, their second gig at ACIDplanet, the band returns again with audio and video remixes. It's a multimedia smorgasbord with "Turn."

Two contests, two winners. Remix the song. Remix the video.

About the Band

Launched as a collective effort between songwriters, Brett “B.” Crockett and Heather Pierce in 2001, Karmacoda laces their electronica/trip hop foundation with elements of rock, pop and jazz, creating truly addictive sonic recreation. Outfitting themselves with the turntable magic of DJ Rafael Acevedo, Eric Matsuno’s hypnotic bass, B. on vocals, guitar and keyboards and the soaring lead vocals of Heather, Karmacoda’s vibe is immediately engaging, particularly live.

Illuminate, which was mastered by Andy VanDette (U2, David Bowie, Moby, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins) at Masterdisk, NYC was released March 5th, 2007.

From the band:

"For the 'Turn' video we tried to push the envelope in terms of the media that was used (time-lapse, animated 35 mm still photography paired with hi-definition video) as well as the use of dynamic editing, creative tiled layout, and interesting framing of the video. For the Acidplanet remix contest we want to encourage the contestants to push the envelope even further, be creative and create as compelling imagery as they can.

"Since we’ve also provided lip-synched video, we would also challenge people to use the songs original tempo (85 bpm) so that they can use the original video."

"Turn" is the first single and video from their 2007 album Illuminate. The video, directed by San Francisco experimental film maker Sinisa Kukic utilizes a unique combination of high definition, full-motion video and animated 35mm time-lapse photography.

For the video, Kukic constructed a custom camera rig that integrates five Oktomat cameras, each with 8 lenses that photograph 8 time-lapse images per 35 mm film frame. Hundreds of rolls of Oktomat 35mm film were shot and the resulting thousands of images were scanned and animated via computer by the director. The video combines full-motion, high definition video with multi-element, animated 35mm photography creating a compelling fusion of high and low tech imagery. "Turn" features Karmacoda at key landmarks throughout their home of San Francisco.

Sinisa Kukic graduated from Southern Illinois University in 2005 with a BA in Cinema and Photography. His film, Breathe (2003), aired on FOX television, and his undergraduate thesis, Conduit of Displacement (2004), won the Loren D. Cocking Animation Award. Kukic is currently enrolled in San Francisco State University's MFA Cinema program, where he continues to make experimental and documentary films.

Other interests include cinematography, hand processing, and new forms of camera subjectivity. Pump (2006), his most recent film, explores the hybridization of the bicycle and the cyclist. His preoccupation with the particulars of camera carriage and movement are rooted in his involvement in the local biking community and his work as a racecar mechanic.

Born in the former Yugoslavia, Kukic and his family moved to Chicago when he was eleven. He currently resides in San Francisco, where he is editing Imaginary Lines, a documentary about migrant border crossings in Arizona.

Karmacoda’s award winning music has been featured extensively in film and television and won the 2003 Independent Music award for Best Song for Film and Television.
