About the Contest

No one but Illegal Substance could get away with dropping a rhyme about Dick Butkus. The band's first encounter with the DEA spurred their creative energy. Adverb shares the inspiration, "We held a record release event titled 'Free Ecstasy.' The TV news picked up the story and informed the DEA. Of course, we weren't handing out free illicit drugs-just our music. The DEA, who lacked both a sense of humor and the ability to interpret this as a music event, warned parents in an attempt to prevent their kids from attending the event. We were promptly denounced and more than likely have dossiers on file."

Pure and simple, Illegal Substance are distilling a pure party album, pushing a universal high guaranteed to lead listeners straight into the purple haze. Get your fix before the DEA breaks down the doors and outlaws Illegal Substance.

Stir up some trouble yourself, and remix "Step to the Floor."

About the Artist

Warped by the Arizona heat, MTV, and the desert party scene, ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE jacks Rock, Hip Hop and Electronica on their self-titled debut album from Moonshine. Lyrically on point, though never P.C., Illegal Substance rocks and rhymes about everything and anything: Sex, Drugs, Alcohol, and the occasional police arrest.

Pulling influences and stealing lines from 80's rock to Snoop Dogg to Dance and Industrial, nothing is safe from Illegal Substance's altogether too rare sense of humor.

Music has yet to be identified by the US government as a mind-altering drug. Illegal Substance intends to change all of that with their addictive, intoxicating beats with a heavy dose of…everything. Sampling music culture in the same way that DJ Shadow samples records, Illegal Substance step to the floor with an attitude that hasn't been seen since Rick Rubin first waltzed into the studio with Run DMC and Aerosmith. In the process of jacking hip-hop, electronica, and rock, this Phoenix crew cuts their drug with youthful defiance and an altogether too rare sense of humor. Ladies and gentleman, Generation Jackass has been scored and the composers are Illegal Substance.

Illegal Substance is the party record of 2003. It's enough to make Fred Durst weep and try to learn to walk this way. It's impossible to clock all of the references checked by the two ill MCs Adverb and P-Nut, their DJ Jimmy and a 4-piece band. Illegal Substance tempts a scene where the Kinks "All Day and All of the Night" gets covered by the Hives fronted by rappers being remixed by N.E.R.D. at a warehouse party at 6 in the morning.
