After thousands of entries and tens of thousands of votes, a winner has been crowned in DAVID BOWIE’s “mash-up” contest, a unique challenge for fans to create the best remix of a song from his current REALITY album combined with another track from his extensive catalog. Southern Californian David Choi—who creatively mashed BOWIE’s “She’ll Drive The Big Car” (from 2003’s REALITY album) and “Shake It” (from 1983’s LET’S DANCE) to form “Big Shaken Car”--was selected from the six finalists by a panel of judges that included BOWIE himself. The 18-year-old self-proclaimed “music freak” will be awarded the 2004 Audi TT coupe grand prize. The contest was co-sponsored by BowieNet, BOWIE's pioneering online community, and Audi of America, which also presented the second North American leg of BOWIE’s “A Reality Tour.”

Grand Prize Winner:

2004 Audi TT Coupe.

Second Place Winner:

ACID® Pro 4 software.
Vegas + DVD™ Production Suite.
Sound Forge® 7 software.
CD Architect™ 5 software.
Four (4) Vision Series™ libraries.
Fifty (50) Loops for ACID® loop libraries.

Third Place Winner:

Sony Vaio Z1 Series laptop computer.

If you've seen the new Audi commercial, then you've already heard a mash-up of the David Bowie classic “Rebel, Rebel” and Bowie's brand new rocker “Never Grow Old” from his new REALITY album. On April 12th, another mash-up by Mark Vidler will be released as a single. But what about NOW?

Now it's your turn to create a great Bowie mash-up and possibly win an Audi TT coupe for your efforts!

About the winners

Grand prize winner David Choi, who graduated from High School last week, said he chose to mash-up the song “She’ll Drive The Big Car” because “the song has a nice groove to it…and the contest was for a car.” At the same time, Choi selected “Shake It” because “it made me feel real good.”

With musical tastes that range from DAVID BOWIE to Usher and Switchfoot, Choi says he’ll study the music industry in college and hopes one day to produce albums and do A&R work. In addition to creating music on his home computer, Choi enjoys hanging with his friends, watching movies and working out.

Second prize was awarded to Steve Dunsford of Hamilton, Ontario, who created “Picasso Lies,” a mash-up of “Pablo Picasso,” BOWIE’s version of the Jonathan Richman-penned classic (from 2003’s REALITY), and “Telling Lies” (from 1997’s EARTHLING). He will receive a complete set of Sony Media Software titles including: ACID® PRO 4 software, Vegas® +DVD Production Suite, Sound Forge® 7 software, CD ArchitectTM 5 software, Four (4) Vision Series™ Libraries and 50 Loops for ACID™ Loop Libraries.

Third prize went to Yoni Gileadi of Salt Lake City, Utah, for “Major Tom Is A Lucky Guy,” a mash-up of BOWIE’s “The Loneliest Guy” (from 2003’s REALITY) and “Space Oddity” (from 1969’s album of the same name). Gileadi will receive a Sony Vaio Z1 series laptop. At the same time, all finalists will receive a free subscription to BowieNet and the latest software from ACID.

About the Contest:

The buzz in the music business is all about mash-ups. You've read about them, you've heard them, now it's time to create your own. A mash-up is a song created from parts of other songs, "mashed-up." Mix and match songs to create something new. That's what you'll do here with any track from David Bowie's "Reality" CD and any other favorite Bowie track. Mix, match, mash-up and make something new.

ACID Pro software has emerged as the leading mash-up tool. It's the industry-leading music creation tool, and is unsurpassed for original music creation. Some of its advanced features — like automatic pitch and tempo matching, 'beatmapping' and 'the chopper' — make it perfect for mash-up creation.

All the tools and material you'll need to enter can be downloaded free from this page. But we're also offering additional options.

ACID XPress is the ten-track free version of ACID. It offers all the basic functionality you'll need to put together a mash-up. Download it from this page.

Screenblast ACID Music introduces you to ACID's advanced arranging and compositional tools, including the Beatmapper, an integral tool in creating Mash-ups. Note that this is a trial version, will stop operating after thirty days, and cannot be reinstalled.

Looking for advanced editing capabilities? Rely on Sound Forge 7 software. It's the industry standard for digital audio editing. Use it to further edit your Bowie samples. Note that this, too, is a trial version, will stop operating after thirty days, and cannot be reinstalled.

Vegas 4 software is a leading audio/video non-linear editor. It's a full-powered production tool that offers unlimited creative opportunities. This demo version will allow you to review your Mash-up in a sophisticated multi-track production environment.

Finally, looking for some royalty-free sounds to expand your mash-up? Look no farther than our Loops for ACID collection of audio samples.

Now that you've got the tools, what about the content? We're offering a wide selection of samples from David Bowie's catalog. But who hasn't got a few favorite Bowie CDs in their collection? You're free to use tracks from those, too.

OK. Download the tool(s) you need. If you already have ACID (or any other music creation tool), use it.

If needed, download the Bowie samples offered to create your mash-up. Remember that all mash-ups must contain at least one track from 'Reality.' You're not limited to the Bowie selections presented here. Use any other favorite Bowie track. However, all entries are limited to Bowie music exclusively. Don't use music from other artists.

Create your mash-up. Once you've finished it, come back to this page and click the UPLOAD MY ENTRY button. Follow the instructions to upload your mash-up, and you've entered the contest!

Special notes:

  • Contestants must mash-up two (2) Bowie songs, one of which must be from "Reality".

  • You must include a complete listing of the tracks used in the mash-up in the Song Description text field provided. Do not include comments, contact information, etc in this field. Entries posted without a full listing of tracks used will be disqualified.

  • Contest entries will be hidden from the rest of the ACIDplanet.com site. Other users will not see your entries on your artist page, and your entries will not be available for streaming, reviewing, etc. You alone, as the artist, will be able to access and listen to your mash-up on ACIDplanet.com for purposes of updating your mix, updating your list of tracks used, and adding other formats. Each week you can hear three finalists on Bowienet.

Please read the rules! This special event requires special instructions, not all of which are discussed above. Make certain your mash-up gets considered by following the rules.

Tips

At 12:00 a.m. midnight PST on Saturday, December 30, 1899, the contest will be closed and no further uploads will be accepted. If you are new to ACIDplanet, you should create an account and upload a song as soon as possible so that you can work out any problems with uploading that you may encounter. Also, uploading a song can take a considerable amount of time. It's better not to wait until the last few hours of the contest to start uploading your entry.

Entrants must upload a Windows Media format or Real Media format version of their entry first. You will not be able to upload any additional formats after the contest closes, so if also you want to upload an mp3 version, please allow enough time to upload them both before the contest closing time.

Entrants must provide accurate contact information (valid e-mail and postal address) in their registration at ACIDplanet.com for the purpose of contacting winners. You can update your contact information here.

Contest Content Help

No Links? If you do not see the "zip" links to the contest loops, it may be because you are running firewall or security software with Ad Blocking turned on. If so, please temporarily turn it off and the links should appear.

What is the .acd file in the sample remix? The .acd file is an ACID project file that contains a sample remix made from eight to ten of the contest loops. It can help you learn how to use ACID, or give you ideas about remixing the track. You don't need to use it, but you'll at least want to download the sample remix so that you get the loops.

Can't open the ACID file? The ACID project file (.acd file) is in ACID 3.0 format. It can be opened in ACID 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0, but not in ACID 1.0 or 2.0. If you are an ACID 1.0 or 2.0 user and you wish to view this file, you can either upgrade or download the current version of ACID XPress in the Tools area of this page. However, you do not need to view the .acd file to enter the contest. You can simply use the contest loops in any version of ACID or other software.
