About the Contest

"I've never been a typical songwriter," Chris explains. "My thing was always, wham bam, whatever I was thinking at that moment. I'd grab the microphone and just yell out whatever was in my head, about girls or the subway, whatever."

Now there's an ACIDplanet.com motif if there ever was one. What to do with a song that's already a sonic collage, created in an ACID mindset? That's your challenge when remixing "Vila Attack."

For Bumblebeez 81, "anything goes" is more than just an aesthetic — it's a way of life. Let's live large.

About the Artist

The spawn of mad musical scientist Chris Colonna, Bumblebeez 81 is a true wonder, a mutated freak child of bloozy punk noise, hip-hop attitude, and sleazy electronica loops and rhythms. Modular Recordings' The Printz album combines Bumblebeez 81's two acclaimed Australian and English releases — White Printz and Red Printz — into one full-length collection of sexy, spontaneous sonic chaos. Utterly intoxicating and absolutely unprecedented, The Printz EPs marks the arrival of something not often seen often these days — a real deal original artist.

Bumblebeez 81 hail from Braidwood, a small rural town near Canberra on the south coast of Australia. Chris Colonna parlayed an interest in art (primarily collage) into music. He learned the drums, rounded up some buddies, and formed his first band in high school.

Computers changed everything. Chris was able to readily employ his collage aesthetic to music. Thus the Bumblebeez 81's sound was born.

After knocking around art schools both in Australia and New York, Chris returned to Braidwood and began working on his music in earnest. He took inspiration from a variety of sources, including modern beatmasters like Timbaland and the Neptunes, as well as a panoply of rock n' roll icons, from the Kinks to the Strokes. His breakthrough moment was winning an Australian radio contest with the song "Step Back."

Flush with that success, Chris continued to compose, and released both White Printz and Red Printz, which met with critical acclaim in the UK.

The success of Bumblebeez 81 has also given Chris the chance to indulge in a life-long career goal, remixing and producing other artists. Bumblebeez 81 are also on tour, and working on their first full-length release.
