About the Contest
When you think of jump-up style jungle, there's really only one player: Aphrodite. And ACIDplanet is bringing him to the masses with our "Sometimes (featuring Beverley Knight)" remix from Aphrodite's mix CD "Overdrive," out on 8/23/05 on Feed Records.About the Artist
London-based DJ/producer Gavin King, a.k.a. Aphrodite has been wowing dancefloors worldwide with his pioneering jump-up style jungle, a sparse, high-energy offshoot of drum 'n' bass. With tracks propelled by simple, rolling drum loops, huge, warbling basslines and loads of chopped-up Hip Hop and ragga samples, Aphrodite’s music is something different and always fresh.More than a decade ago, despite the scene’s entrenched underground status, Aphrodite’s sound found a wider audience and with it came commercial success. His sound was the first of its kind to make the leap across the Atlantic by intriguing American interest with dubplate renditions of Hip Hop tracks like A Tribe Called Quest’s "1nce Again" and Blackstreet's "No Diggety." These underground hits led to wildly-popular remixes for the Jungle Brothers ("Jungle Brother") and The Luniz ("I Got 5 On It"). His discography is packed with similar chart-topping jump-up tracks. The 1997 CD compilation Aphrodite Recordings makes for a good comprehensive introduction to his work, while his self-titled 1999 American debut collected old tracks and a few new remixes. King has also appeared at the helm of several mix albums, including 2003’s Urban Junglist, a flawless dancefloor-ready showcase of his DJ and remix skills. His first studio production album with V2 Records, Aftershock, was critically acclaimed for its genre bending use of vocalists and rappers alike. 2005 sees King’s return to the decks with a brand new mix album Overdrive, which features several original Aphrodite tracks including his collaborations with R&B sensation Beverley Knight and long-time partner Mickey Finn.
Nowadays, with a busy DJ schedule and label management duties, the opportunity to guide the direction of the new wave of drum ’n’ bass and jungle presents itself. The fresh sounds constantly being injected into the scene require careful consideration and judgment. This Aphrodite entrusts to the fans of drum ‘n’ bass by routinely pressing dubplates and road-testing them on the dancefloor the following weekend. The sweaty masses don’t lie, and they don’t dance to just anything. Aphrodite has carefully honed his sound with these considerations. As one of the most influential drum ‘n’ bass DJs worldwide, the man knows how to rock a crowd with an infectious mixture of styles and an irresistible party vibe.
